Sanding hardwood floors?

I need to sand a hardwood floor just enough to paint it. I know that sanding hardwood floors is an art form in itself and that the marks you leave will be scene through the typical stain and clear coat finish, but since I’m going to paint the floor it doesn’t matter unless I damage the floor with the sander.

Again, I just need to sand the floor enough to remove the clear coat. I assume I should rent a drum or orbital floor sander. Which would you recommend and what grit sandpaper? And I’d like to hear any other advice too, thanks.
If I don’t need to go deep then is sanding by hand OK?

No don’t rent either of those. You don’t need to go deep, just take off the top layer so the paint will adhere. Go to a home improvement store and ask them for a hand sander that is on a handle (I don’t remember what it is called but it is usually used to sand sheet rock joints in ceilings) Use this with 60grit Sand Paper, then use a tack cloth to p/up dust and go over it again w/ 120grit and tack cloth again, and it is ready to paint.
